In traditional Chinese Medicine food is part of our medicine. The types of foods we eat, how we cook them and when we eat them (season and time of day) all impact our health. Of coarse a diet rich in whole fresh foods that are in season is the ideal. However in our modern society where food can be sourced from anywhere this can be difficult. Shopping a markets and greengrocers can help, as well as looking at the cheaper price tags. If strawberries are $10 a punnet then probably its not strawberry season.

So in winter we are often left with less fruit options; Apples and pears are generally in season during autumn, from March to May in Australia. Below is a useful recipe for those left over or overripe in your fruit bowl.

Traditional view of Pears

Pear for cough

Pears are cool, sweet and slightly sour. Valued for their moistening and clearing properties;

Moisten the lungs and help stop cough especially for dry coughs but also good for phlegm that is hard to cough up

Relieve thirst great for those drying reverse cycle heaters

Reduces internal heat which in Traditional Chinese Medicine can lead to constipation

Traditional view point of Apples

Apples are neutral, sweet and slightly sour. They are considered gentle and harmonising;

They are also good for the lungs and genetate fluids

Apples are also good for digestion and can relieve diarrhoea

The are also considering calming to the mind, so maybe an apple a day might keep the doctor away!
